CXR Recommends: Designing Jobs for Future of Work

Organization Design may be your company's "strategic weapon" moving forward

A new research report from Josh Bersin emphasizes the importance of organizational design in supporting your company’s growth. The report is definitely worth the read – especially for our members in healthcare, where turnover is high and candidate pools are more limited. Here are a few key takeaways:

No surprise that in this hiring market, many organizations are investing in talent acquisition more than ever before. However, Bersin’s research suggests that organizations should also be investing more heavily in “work design,” or a bottom-up approach to evaluating and creating jobs “that cluster work tasks in the optimum human way.”

Bersin interviewed several organizations and found that many managers are opting to “over-hire” for roles, resulting in high wages and high turnover. Bersin notes that companies have more success in enabling their employees to work at the “top of their license” (i.e., performing tasks that their experience and education has prepared them for, rather than taking on work that another role could manage). As an example, in the healthcare field, nurses should not be performing the work of a medical assistant.

With a falling fertility rate worldwide and millions of people taking early retirement, Bersin notes that the hiring market will only worsen. Strengthening your TA teams will only get you so far – organization design will be your “strategic weapon” in moving your company forward. It’s all interesting food for thought as we look ahead
